From small beginnings in the late 1960s at Werda Farm, Anton (snr) and Deidre Viljoen have expanded their farming operations over four decades. Today the next generation of the Viljoen family, brothers Anton and Gabriël Viljoen, has taken over the running of this family business. This large family farming enterprise includes farms in the Hex, Berg and Orange River production regions. The farms in the Hex and Berg River regions are owned and managed by Anton Viljoen (Villion Farms) with his wife Judi. ASV Farms remains the overall marketing company used by both these entities. Werda in the Hex River Valley is the headquarters of ASV Farms.
The Hex River farms are situated in the Hex River Valley, one of the oldest and most successful production regions in the country. This production region has produced table grapes for more than a century and remains successful due to its good water supply from the surrounding mountains and the fertile soils in the valley floor. The harvest from these farms provides the mid to late season supply.
Grand view is one of the larger grape packing facilities in the valley and, as the name suggests, it has a commanding view over the valley’s vineyards. Grand View offers visitors the opportunity to taste a range of different table grape varieties according to seasonal availability during the harvest. The characteristics of each variety (including red, white and black seedless varieties) explained as guests proceed through the tasting process. This venue also provided the opportunity for a tour through the table grape pack house, explaining the various steps of this complex procedure.
This is only available during the harvest season between January and April.
